Fourth Grade Prayers
• Jesus Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
• Act of Faith
O my God, I firmly believe that you are one God in three
divine Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I believe that
your divine Son became man and died for our sins and that
he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe these
and all the truths which the Holy Catholic Church teaches
because you have revealed them who are eternal truth and
wisdom, who can neither deceive nor be deceived. In this
faith I intend to live and die. Amen
V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,
R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of
Christ.
Let us pray: Pour forth, we beseech thee, O Lord, thy grace
into our hearts; that we, to whom the Incarnation of Christ,
thy Son, was made known by the message of an angel, may
by his Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of his Resurrection.
Through the same Christ, our Lord. Amen
• Act of Hope
O Lord God, I hope by your grace for the pardon of all my
sins and after life here to gain eternal happiness because you
have promised it who are infinitely powerful, faithful, kind,
and merciful. In this hope I intend to live and die. Amen
• Act of Love
O Lord God, I love you above all things and I love my
neighbor for your sake because you are the highest, infinite
and perfect good, worthy of all my love. In this love I intend
to live and die. Amen

Week of January 24
Happy New Year! Sorry for the missing posts. Just like the students, it takes me a while to get back into the routine.
This week is the second week of the second semester. Report cards will be coming home this Friday. The next week is Catholic Schools Week—one we all love! Check the Newsletter online to find out all the activities. There are two field trips that week, one to the Public Library and the other to Mt. St. Francis.
As for this week, the third graders’ Reading is the Review Lesson. Later in the week they’ll take the Theme 3 test. The spelling lesson has a review of thirty words. On Tuesday they will test on Chapter 8 in Math, all about collecting and understanding data. After that, we begin multiplication. Because they have been introduced already through the weekly Lessons, they already have a good idea.
The fourth graders tested two weeks ago and have begun Theme 4. This week is the Reading Writing Workshop: Writing a Persuasive Essay. Each day will be a part of the Writing Process. The spelling words are words that are frequently misspelled. The Math focus is division. We’re just beginning long division, and there will be lots of practice.
Keep reading for Star Calendar, testing the books on the AR program, and getting some math practice with First in Math. They also should be practicing typing skills. I know it’s a lot.
Week of December 13
Sorry about missing the weekly post last week…sign of the busy time.
We have been fortunate the snowstorms have occurred on Saturdays. While snow days are nice, we’ve had more than our share the last few years. It would be nice to be off school on December 22. That’s our first make up day for a snow day.
This week has a field trip for the fourth and fifth graders. We’re going to the Mississippi River Museum on Thursday. This is a culmination for the Changing Earth Science Unit for the fourth graders. The fifth graders have been studying a similar unit. Ms. Massey-Watters participated in Clarke University’s River Quest summer project and was given money to share the river with her students. We are fortunate to go with her! We leave at 9 AM and return after lunch. The students will pack a sack lunch.
This week the third graders and fourth graders have a Reading Writing Workshop. Both groups will be writing a fictional story. They will be using Google Docs so I can access their writings, and they will be able to from home. We’ll be using the Writing Format of Pre-Writing (making a web), Drafting, Revising, Proofreading, and Publishing. Spelling work will go with this Reading Writing Workshop.
After a few weeks of subtraction practice, the third graders will work on telling time and counting money in math. The fourth graders are working on large number multiplication by one digit. Soon we’ll move into two digit multipliers. Practice at home is always good.
In fourth grade Science we’ve moved into the Physical and Chemical Properties Unit. Already the students have done some experiments with five white powders. Ask your child about their similarities and differences.

Week of November 29
Happy Advent! Hopefully we begin this week well rested after Thanksgiving vacation. There will be an all school prayer service Monday morning in the upstairs hallway observing the First Week of Advent. Most mornings we will meet first thing to say Advent prayers.
This week’s Reading for both groups will be a review of the stories and skills for Theme 2. All will also be participating in the Martin Luther King Writing and Poster Contest. Entries are due on Thursday so we will be working all week. Here is an age appropriate link for the students that we will be using this week: Martin Luther King and Other Important African Americans
In Math, the third graders will continue to practice subtraction with regrouping and should be testing by the end of the week. Fourth graders are still working with graphs and data. They, too, will be finished with the chapter by the end of the week and will be reviewing before testing.
The students are making great strides in their reading and testing for Accelerated Reading. Almost all have earned new certifications this school year. If they haven’t, they need to be reading more and testing soon. I have met with all the students after conferences to determine goals for reading levels and points. Some students have been reaching goals and setting new ones. Yes! The accuracy goal for all is 85%. Each student should be bringing home his or her TOPS reports each week for you to see. As the weather becomes colder, there should be more time to read. Thanks for all the encouragement you give.
Thanksgiving Week–November 22
There are only two days of school this week. For that reason, all the students will not have a regular reading and spelling schedule. We will be reading the end of theme short stories, preparing for the Theme 2 test, and looking at Thanksgiving long ago.
Next week there will be the review of main ideas taught in Theme 2 and the spelling lesson will be the Theme 2 Review.
Here is a Thanksgiving link:
Week of November 15
This is our last full week before Thanksgiving. Both groups will be reading their last story in Theme 2. Third graders are reading Dancing Rainbows, and the fourth graders read Boss of the Plains. Both have settings in the Western U.S. and are non-fiction selections. This week’s spelling words go with these stories.
Math lessons are a continuation of last week. Third grade will test early in the week on 2 and 3 digit subtraction. The following chapter expands that concept by using 4 and 5 digits for subtraction. Fourth graders are working with data collection and graphing. Ask them what a stem and leaf graph is.
Last week we remembered Veterans Day by writing a letter to Christopher Billmyer, a Holy Family Marine injure
d in Afghanistan. We know that freedom isn’t free.
Week of November 8
Tests are over, and we’re looking forward to a fairly normal week. Wednesday is an early dismissal day; students are out at 1:10 PM. It is an Out of Uniform day.
Third grade students are reading the story The Talking Cloth and will have the spelling words that go with that story. Their math lessons will focus on subtraction with regrouping. Fourth grade students are reading A Very Important Day and have those spelling words. Their math lessons include the use of the calendar and some work with Range, Median, and Mode.
Week of November 1
All Saints Prayer Service The fourth graders come to school on Monday, November 1, dressed as the saints they have researched. There is a prayer service for all students in the upstairs hallway. The “Saints” will introduce themselves, tell about their feast day, and for whom they are a patron saint. Later in the week, they will share more information about their saints in Religion class.
Iowa Tests of Basic Skills or ITBS Testing All third, fourth, and fifth grade students will be taking ITBS tests this week. Mrs. Welter’s class will be reading a novel instead of using the anthology. The third graders are reading The Promise. The fourth graders are reading The Mouse and the Motorcycle. There will be no formal spelling lessons this week.
Week of October 25
This is conference week. Conferences will be held on Monday and Wednesday.
